NDIS, in plain English.

A practical guide to the National Disability Insurance Scheme: what is funded, how plans work,

and how to make your funding go further.

What Is the NDIS

A short overview.

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) provides funding to eligible Australians with a permanent and significant disability so they can access reasonable and necessary supports. It is administered by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA). Eligibility is based on age (under 65 at the time of access), residency and the impact of the disability on everyday function.

An NDIS plan sets out goals, supports and funding amounts for a defined plan period (usually 12 to 24 months). Funding is grouped into three support categories: Core, Capital and Capacity Building. Each category has its own rules about what can and cannot be claimed.

Support Categories

The three NDIS budgets explained.

1

Core Supports

Day-to-day supports: personal care, household tasks, transport, consumables and assistance to access the community. Most flexible budget — funds usually move between sub-categories.

2

Capacity Building

Therapy, support coordination, plan management, skill development and improved daily living. These funds are not flexible between sub-categories.

3

Capital Supports

Assistive technology and home modifications. Quotes and assessments are usually required before purchase.

Plan Management

Three ways to manage your plan.

NDIA-managed. The NDIA pays providers directly. You can only use NDIS-registered providers.

Plan-managed. A registered plan manager pays the invoices on your behalf and tracks the budget. You can use registered or non-registered providers. Plan management funding is automatically added to your plan if you ask for it.

Self-managed. You pay providers yourself and claim reimbursement. Maximum flexibility, maximum admin.

Neta Care provides plan management as one of our service streams.

Choosing a Provider

Questions to ask any NDIS provider.

Are you NDIS-registered? Who is your auditor?

What is your travel charging policy?

How do you match support professionals to participants?

What happens if my regular support professional is unavailable?

How do I raise a concern or complaint?

What is your cancellation policy?

How quickly can you start? What is your current capacity?

Plan Reviews

Preparing for your plan reassessment.

Plan reassessments happen at the end of each plan period. The NDIA looks at how the previous plan went and what supports you need going forward. To prepare:

Gather reports from each provider (therapy reports, support coordinator summary, GP letter).

Review your goals — are they still right? Any new ones?

Note what worked and what did not in the previous plan.

Track changes in your needs, daily routine, living situation or informal supports.

Your support coordinator (if you have one) and Neta Care's allied health team can help you prepare the evidence the NDIA needs to fund the right supports.
